Crete - Essential Information
Airport
The “Nikos Kazantzakis” is one of the three largest international airports in Greece, and is only 10 minutes away from the centre of Heraklion. If you take a taxi you will pay approximately €15 (including the luggage). You can also take the bus No 1, which takes you to the town centre.
If you plan to rent a car on the island, just keep in mind that even if the local traffic is not huge (during summer the problem is much bigger) you will face a great problem with parking, especially in the centre of the town. Get a car only if you plan to visit other cities as well. Within Heraklion it will be better if you rent a bike or a motorcycle.
Public Transport
Buy tickets for the busses from the kiosks you will find in many places in the town. It will be better to buy tickets for your return as well at the same time. Buses start at 5.30-6 am and the stop around midnight. Buses run every 20-30 minutes.
Taxi
Don’t take a taxi “without reason.” You can go by foot to most of the important places of Heraklion.
