In 2012 Helsinki is proud to be World Design Capital together with its neighbouring municipalities Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The official programme for WDC Helsinki 2012 includes around 300 special events and projects, all of which share the same goal: To find ways in which design can be used to make cities more functional and better places. Ice Hockey World Championships - The 2011 ice hockey world champions Finland will host the 2012 Ice Hockey World Championships together with Sweden. Two preliminary rounds of 8 teams each will be held, one at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki and the other in Stockholm. The deciding match will take place in Helsinki.

Helsinki 200 years as capital - In 2012 Helsinki celebrates the bicentennial of becoming Finland’s capital. In 1812 Helsinki was made the capital of what was then the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. This marked the most important turning point in Helsinki’s history, initiating the city’s rapid development. The programme for the anniversary year includes special exhibitions and a wide range of city events. The main stage is Unioninkatu street, which was named after the union between Finland and Russia. In the autumn the Blue Line laser beam will connect the Tähtitorninmäki hill and Kallio Cathedral.
